When Sculpture by the Sea first started out in 1997, the idea of having a mobile phone with a camera attached still belonged mostly to the realms of science fiction.
And the cameras that were attached to a few of those early phones were clunky and of such low resolution that no “real” photographer would dream of using them.
Fast forward 20 years and practically everyone has a high-end phone in their pocket all the time, with the ability instantly to share the images they snap.
And with some of the very latest phones, the quality of those images can be extraordinary.
As Sculpture by the Sea has grown to attract more than 500,000 visitors each year, so the number of images snapped of the sculptures has increased exponentially, flooding our social media feeds.
