Melbourne is being dug up.

The equivalent of 80 Olympic-sized swimming pools of rock and dirt is being excavated to make way for the new underground Parkville Station.

Work started on Monday at the site, below Grattan Street, between Leicester Street and Royal Parade, which will become one of five stations built as part of the $11-billion Metro Tunnel Project slated for completion in 2025.

Acting Premier James Merlino said the site was 270 metres long and 30 metres wide, with 200,000 cubic metres of dirt set to be dug up this year.
