Australia’s Wonderland shut in April 2004, with management blaming a number of factors, including the September 11 and Bali bombing attacks and the collapse of Ansett, for the closure.
The theme park opened in December 1985 and included themed areas like Hanna Barbera Land, a water park and a wildlife park.
Ermington Putt Putt
In April 2017, Ermington Putt Putt closed after almost half a century and more than five million visitors. The much-loved mini golf course was sold to Chinese developer Aqualand in 2014 for $130 million, and the centre was closed to make way for apartment development.
The wife of owner Tom Wykoff, Josie Harris, said at the time the closure was “heartbreaking”.
“I know you’re sad, probably as sad as we are, but thank you for supporting us all these years,” she said.
Manly Sea Life Sanctuary
After 55 years, Manly Sea Life Sanctuary closed its doors for the final time in January last year as maintenance of the popular aquarium because unfeasible.
Senior operations manager Ashley Hayes said at the time it “wasn’t an easy decision” to close the aquarium. All 2000 animals were relocated.
