It’s a hot one in Brisbane today so it looks like it will be a good toss to win. I’d be shocked if either captain does not choose to bat first. The toss is at 1.30pm (AEDT).
Big moment in the careers of Kurtis Patterson and Jhye Richardson. They’ve been presented their baggy green caps by Michael Hussey and Damien Fleming respectively. For the record, Patterson is cap No.457 and Richardson No.458. These things matter. Just ask Michael Slater. He made his debut in the same Test as Brendon Julian in 1993. Slater had thought he was cap No.356 as Australia had batted first and he had opened the innings. So he had the number tattooed on him. But the convention is in Tests where there are multiple debutants the cap number is determined alphabetically by surname, which meant Julian should have been 356 and Slater 357. The then Australian Cricket Board were happy for Slater to be No.356 given what James Sutherland described as the “fairly exceptional circumstances”.
