Community protest group launches appeal against Mt Coot-tha zipline

Loading

The appeal claims the development application is in conflict with the Mt Coot-tha Neighbourhood Plan and the Koala Conservation Plan.

Claiming the development is “out of character and out of scale” with the mountain’s development features, the appeal claims it would have an unacceptable impact on visual amenity in the region.

“Further, the extent of the development’s visual impact has been underestimated and/or understated,” the appeal says.

Noise issues are also raised, while traffic plans for the development were “unsafe and inadequate”.

“Any matters calimed to be relevant, such as the calimed economic, social or general benefits of the prpoosed development, are not sufficient to justify approval of the development,” the appeal concludes.

A council spokeswoman said council would defend its decision.

“As part of the development application prepared, council submitted 17 different ecological reports prepared by expert external consultants totalling more than 3000 pages,” she said.

“Due to the extensive work undertaken, council is confident that all potential impacts including environmental, visual, heritage and traffic have been considered and properly addressed.

“Council is protecting and enhancing Mt Coot-tha, by creating a green leisure precinct with a new scenic zipline and canopy tour planned as well as more trees, picnic areas and walking trails.

“As the appeal has been lodged with the Planning and Environment Court, council cannot comment further on this issue.”

More than 3000 public submissions were made to the development application before its approval, the majority against it.
