It would be the exclamation mark on her career that connections crave on top of almost $400,000 in prizemoney to date.
Nicci’s Gold will spearhead Portelli’s two-pronged attack on the race, which will also include Testashadow trying to break a winless run stretching back to December 2017.
I think she proved last week even to me – I was still a bit skeptical myself – that had she any luck she finishes in the top three.
Asked whether Nicci’s Gold was ready to win at stakes level, Portelli said: “I think she proved last week even to me – I was still a bit skeptical myself – that had she any luck she finishes in the top three and gets that black type that every mare needs.
“She’s the horse ready to win and just the edge off it will help her, and she’ll certainly get that. [Testashadow] doesn’t mind it soft, but I think the 1500 a fortnight later is probably where he peaks third-up.”
Portelli said he wasn’t sure if Nicci’s Gold would race on.
“We’re looking at just getting through the spring, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we just get through one more campaign. But there’s been a few offers for her already, and if she gets black type she might be too valuable to keep going.”
