Customer tackles woman to thwart armed robbery

A female would-be armed robber wielding a fake gun was tackled by customer at a Melbourne convenience store on Saturday.

Police allege a woman wearing a motorcycle helmet and carrying an imitation handgun entered the Victoria Avenue store in Albert Park just after 3.30pm.

She allegedly threatened the attendant and demanded he hand over money from the till.

Police say a 57-year-old Albert Park man who was shopping in the store tackled the woman and knocked the fake gun from her hand.

He then restrained the woman until police arrived.

A 35-year-old Mildura woman has been charged with attempted armed robbery, aggravated burglary and firearm offences.

She was remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court tomorrow.
