Melbourne Express, Friday, August 2, 2019

A pharmacy, bottle shops and grocery stores were targeted during a spate of armed robberies across Melbourne’s western suburbs over the past week.

A gang of youths – seven males and a girl all aged between 14 and 20 – were arrested overnight after a low-speed police pursuit involving a suspected stolen van.

Patrolling police came across the HiAce van in Mossfiel Drive, Hoppers Crossing about 10.10pm yesterday. They used “shop sticks” to puncture the tyres of the van on Shaws Road in Werribee.

The vehicle continued onto Market Road before it pulled over and 10 youths tried to flee. The dog squad was used to catch eight  of the group, while another two remain on the run.

Four of the youths are being interviewed over six armed robberies since July 28 at pharmacies, bottle shops and grocery stores in Sunshine West, St Albans, Deer Park and Hoppers Crossing.

Hello, and welcome to Friday! The countdown to the weekend begins….

It’s nudging 10 degrees outside in the city right now, and we’re headed for a top of 14 degrees. There was some rain overnight in the suburbs, and there’s a medium chance of showers in the city this morning. Bring a brolly.

The trains are a mixed bag this morning. There are major delays on the Belgrave, Glen Waverley and Mernda trains due to several cancelled trains. There are also minor delays on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines.

We’ll bring you all the latest news throughout the morning. If you see anything of interest, feel free to share it with other Melbourne Express readers via email or Twitter.
