‘More unpredictable’: DFAT raises travel warning for Hong Kong

The Australian government has raised its travel advice for Hong Kong amid escalating civil protests and a dramatic police response.

The government now urges Australian travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution’ in visiting the independently governed city state.

“Protests have become more unpredictable and are expected to continue,” the SmartTraveller website said. “Tourist areas have been affected.”

“There is a risk of violent confrontation between protesters and police, or criminally-linked individuals, particularly at unauthorised protests.”
