Girl, 9, drowns in north Queensland river

A nine-year-old girl has drowned in a north Queensland river.

The girl was pulled unconscious from the Ross River at Rossiter Park in the Townsville suburb of Aitkenvale just after 4.30pm on Monday.

She was taken to Townsville Hospital but later died.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Miles told media at the scene the girl was believed to have been underwater for between five and 20 minutes.
