Immersive labyrinth of Victorian gothic a sure hit

Broad Encounters, 222 Macaulay Rd, North Melbourne, until September 15

A Midnight Visit – a large-scale, immersive theatre experience based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe – comes to a North Melbourne warehouse after a successful season in Sydney. And this gothic wonderland will be just as popular here, if the large crowds it has attracted so far are any indication.

Immersive theatre has become more popular in recent years, with the rise of everything from “escape rooms” to experimental arts festivals such as Dark Mofo. Connoisseurs will recall Teatro de los Sentidos’ The Echo of the Shadow, based on a Hans Christian Andersen story, at the 2016 Melbourne Festival.

If you were fortunate enough to travel into that sensual labyrinth, you won’t have forgotten it, and I doubt anything is likely to match its scenic brilliance or exquisite evocation of mood. However, the meticulous set and costume design in A Midnight Visit comes close. Plus, it’s a lot of fun – especially for mavens of the macabre.
