New York: Ashleigh Barty has equalled her best result at the US Open and is just one win away from her third grand slam quarter-final this year after a clinical elimination of Greek Maria Sakkari in the third round.
The French Open champion clicked her game up a gear as she moved towards a potential quarter-final showdown with Serena Williams after beating Sakkari 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 27 minutes.
Barty was rapt to advance to the second week at Flushing Meadows after gaining the critical break of serve at 5-5 in the opening set. Then in the second set, Barty broke again in the fifth game to move to a winning position.
“This is an incredible court. New York is an incredible city and last year I felt like an adopted American playing with Coco (Vandeweghe) in the doubles, so I’m glad you haven’t forgotten,” Barty said after enjoying clear crowd favouritism during the match.
