Kates get crackin’ on hen’s night rituals

MELBOURNE WRITERS FESTIVAL
Hen’s Night with The Kates ★★★½
Kate McLennan, Kate McCartney and guests

Melba Spiegeltent, Collingwood, August 31

In their first major outing since they signed off from Get Krack!n with an episode described by this paper described as Australian TV’s “most searing half-hour in living memory”, the Kates – that’s McLennan and McCartney – threw a hen’s night for Melbourne Writers Festival.

In similar vein to their ABC TV show, the darlings of tragicomedy, decked in sequinned dresses with the tags still on, hosted a roll-call of talented guests and proceeded to subvert every expected cliche of that girly pre-nuptial ritual.

Instead of strippers, there was gorgeous and amusing queer burlesque from Bailee-Rose Farnham. In place of the usual penis-themed antics was a game of “guess the cloaca”. A trip to the karaoke bar saw Shania Twain’s Man! I Feel Like a Woman deconstructed and torn to shreds.
