Sonos, the company best known for its multi-room audio speakers, has taken its first full steps into the sunshine with its announcement today of the battery-powered Sonos Move.
Move is a $649 portable speaker similar in appearance to a Sonos One but with a handle, a battery that can power it for ten hours and, for the first time ever on a Sonos speaker, Bluetooth connectivity. At 3kg it certainly has more heft than most portable speakers, and one need not be concerned about it blowing away, but the ergonomic handle built into the back makes it comfortable enough to carry it to where you need it.
The IP56 rating only zones the Move for dust particles and water spray, so you don’t want to keep it out in the elements when you’re not using it. Sonos’ internal testing with liquids such as mustard and sunscreen show it’ll survive a little more than advertised, though you still probably shouldn’t test its limits.
Having it usually live in a wireless charging base means users can avoid the inconvenience of plugging and unplugging it whenever they want to take it somewhere. Bases will also be available separately for $119.95, for those who want to have more than one. In a pinch it can be charged via USB-C.
