Two men dead in drifting catamaran off central Queensland coast

Two men have been found dead in a drifting catamaran off the central Queensland coast.

Another passing boat made the grim discovery about 11.30pm on Friday near the mouth of Island Head Creek at Shoalwater, 110 kilometres north-west of Rockhampton.

Water police responded and officers believe the catamaran hit an object in the water at speed and the two men were killed in the collision.

They were the only two people on the six-metre Sailfish 3000 catamaran, which suffered significant damage to the front, below the water line.

Nearby Shoalwater Bay is home to the joint-military exercise Talisman Sabre, which involves war games between several nations including Australia and the United States.
