Woman fled car stuck on railway tracks seconds before it was hit by a train

A woman whose car got stuck on railway tracks in Brighton narrowly escaped injury by fleeing her vehicle just before it was clipped by a train.

It caused delays on the Sandringham line on Sunday morning, with buses replacing trains between Sandringham and Elsternwick, but normal service has now resumed.

The incident happened on the Sandringham line around 5am.

The woman had turned onto the railway lines at the intersection of New Street and Beach Road when her car became stuck around 5am, police said.

The Murrumbeena woman, aged in her 50s, managed to escape the car before it was clipped by a train. She was not injured.

She has been taken to a police station for an evidentiary breath test, police said.
