Tom Papley has nominated Carlton as his preferred destination to be traded to, understanding he may be held to his contract at Sydney.
Despite reports last week that he had been offered huge money at North Melbourne, Papley has indicated to his management that he wants to join the Blues who have been courting him for several months.
From country Victoria originally, Papley has told his management and the Swans that he would ideally like to return home for family reasons but is aware the club that drafted him as a rookie may decline the request.
Papley triggered a clause in his deal this season that extended his to 2023.
The fact he has four years left on a deal complicates the trade for Carlton who are believed to be willing to part with their first round pick and currently pick eight.
While Sydney will be desperate to hang onto a talented small forward who is under contract, the transfer may depend on the movements of injured Essendon star Joe Daniher.
