Inside Running: sprinting mare hoping to go one better

Blink and you Miss Leonidas

After just failing to catch Nature Strip in the Moir Stakes last month, Bendigo horse of the year Miss Leonidas will attempt to claim the group 2 Caulfield Sprint on Caulfield Cup with Stephen Baster on board.

Although disappointed at the narrow defeat at Moonee Valley, trainer Shaun Dwyer is hopeful the five-year-old speedster can win her fifth race and push her career earnings past $500,000.

Dwyer has used all his experience to get the best out of Miss Leonidas, who was difficult to handle in her early years, listening to wise advice jockey Dwayne Dunn once gave him, after he rode another temperamental sprinter, to “train it like a stayer and race it as a sprinter”.

“This preparation has been a bit different. I used to walk her four laps of the track and keep her quite sedate,” Dwyer said. “Now she can go around a little bit more, while still within herself, and get the benefit.”
