Giants part with football boss Wayne Campbell

Despite reaching the club’s first grand final in 2019, Greater Western Sydney is set to part company with football boss Wayne Campbell.

Campbell, who has a contract with the Giants for 2020, is set to leave the club soon, in a change that was reportedly on the cards earlier this season before the club’s strong finish and finals campaign.

Campbell had a problematic relationship with GWS chief executive Dave Matthews, the major driver of the decision to remove the former Richmond captain from his role as head of football operations – an outcome that had been mooted earlier this year.

But GWS’s finals surge and especially their stirring upset of Collingwood in the preliminary final led to a view – admittedly largely external – that Campbell would stay on with the Giants, where he has been a strong supporter of senior coach Leon Cameron, a former teammate at the Tigers.
