Spider-Man gives a boost to shopping centre landlords

Shopping centre landlords can thank The Lion King and Spider-Man for luring customers through the doors over the past three months.

Shunning department stores and jewellery shops, shoppers seem to have used their tax refunds for to go out for dinner, get new glasses to watch the movies and have a beauty treatment, according to the latest sales data from retail landlords.

In its quarterly update, Scentre Group, which owns the Westfield shopping centres, and diversified developer and manager GPT Group reported an overall rise in sales of 2.4 per cent and 0.1 per cent, respectively, for the three months to September 30.

On a category breakdown at Scentre, the woes of department stores continued with sales growth slowing by 6.1 per cent for the quarter, while the discretionary jewellery sector was hit with 4.3 per cent negative sales growth.
