Would-be Queensland thief drowns during escape

A would-be thief disturbed while trying to break into a waterfront home on the Gold Coast has drowned after jumping into a lake to escape, police said.

Witnesses said they saw the man trying to break into a home at Robina Waters before the drowning.

Witnesses who reported the break and enter at Robina Waters about 11.20am on Thursday saw the man dive into the water but did not see him surface.

Police divers recovered the man’s body about 1.30pm and detectives are trying to identify him.
