Joeys down powerhouse Nigeria to make knockout phase in U-17 World Cup

Australia’s Joeys have dug deep to beat Nigeria 2-1 to ensure themselves a spot in the last 16 of the Under-17 World Cup in Brazil.

German-based striker Noah Botic sealed the win from the penalty spot after Australia had taken a first half lead only for the Africans – winners of the Under 17 World Cup in both 2013 and 2015 – to equalise soon after.

Australia had been beaten by Nigeria on the last six occasions they had met.

Ecuador beat Hungary in the other pool game, a late goal giving them a 3-2 victory.

Nigeria, Ecuador and Australia all qualify for the knock out stage as a result.
