Father in custody over death of seven-week-old baby son

Joseph McDonald, 22, made no application for bail when he appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday morning following the death of his seven-week-old baby Lucas.

The Benalla man was charged on Sunday morning with the murder of his seven-week-old son Lucas McDonald on Tuesday, according to court documents. McDonald handed himself in to police on Saturday night.

His lawyer Sharon Healey told the court this was the man’s first time in custody, and he was vulnerable because of his young age. She also requested that McDonald see a nurse while in custody.

A bearded McDonald appeared in the dock with mussed brown hair, wearing a black t-shirt and black pants. He remained silent through the court appearance.
