Residents warned to prepare to leave homes in FNQ as bushfire rages

A bushfire is threatening the homes of far north Queensland residents, with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services warning conditions could worsen.

A QFES alert about 1pm on Sunday is warning residents in Cooktown to prepare to leave the area as the situation could worsen quickly.

“Currently as at 12.55pm, Sunday 3 November, a large, fast moving fire is travelling in an westerly direction from Railway Avenue, Railway Avenue West and Poison Creek Road, Cooktown towards Wilton Access Road, Cooktown,” it said.

“The fire is likely to impact Wilton Access Road, Cooktown.

“Fire crews are working to contain the fire but firefighters may not be able to protect every property.”
