Hong Kong student death expected to spur protests

Beijing: A 22-year-old student who fell from a multi-storey car park after police fired tear gas nearby to disperse protesters died in hospital on Friday morning, prompting anger from democracy activists.

Computer science student Alex Chow suffered brain injuries after falling from the third to the second floor of a parking station in Tseung Kwon O on Sunday.

The Hong Kong government swiftly issued a statement expressing “great sorrow and regret” over the student’s death, as protesters gathered in the Central district, some carrying white flowers and calling for “revenge”.

“This is the first death in the course of a protest and first directly linked to a protest. Protesters are alleging the death was caused directly or indirectly by police actions on that night,” said author and lawyer Antony Dapiran.
