Sean Abbott has caught the attention of senior batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner as the paceman eyes more international honours following his impressive return to the Australian team.
Five years after his last appearance for his country, Abbott starred with two wickets as Australia maintained their unbeaten record, in the format for 2019, with a series victory over Pakistan. They loom as one of the teams to beat in next year’s World Cup at home.
Abbott has shown great resilience to resurrect his international career. His next assignment is for Australia A though his chances of breaking into the Test side this summer will hinge on an injury to one of the leading quartet of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc.
Abbott, who has an excellent record with the Dukes ball, this week signed a deal to play for Derbyshire in England’s county competition in a sign of how keen he is to develop his game. A strong season there can only enhance his claims for future Ashes tours.
