Properties impacted, ambulances called in as crews battle out of control Gnangara bushfire

The fire was first reported at 11.40am at the intersection of Sydney Road.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has since issued downgraded an emergency warning for an area bounded by Lake Gnangara, Sydney Road, Tuscan Way, Colonial Circle, Lakelands Drive, Badgerup Road and Lake Gnangara to a watch and act just after 1.30pm.

“The alert level for this fire has been downgraded as it is now controlled,” the alert said.

“There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching in the area and conditions are changing.

“You need to leave or get ready to actively defend.”

The blaze has burned through several acres and is moving south south easterly direction.

It is controlled but not contained, and firefighters are expecting the wind to change from north westerly.

Sydney Road has been closed off to the public as upwards of 30 firefighting appliances from Malaga, Wangarra, Wanneroo and Quinns Rocks work to control the blaze, which has extended to a marque in one of the properties.

A helitank and aerial support has also been requested to protect properties in the area.

A control point has also been set up on 367 Sydney Road, and WA police, Western Power and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attraction are all on scene.

A welfare centre has been set up at the Wanneroo Recreation Centre by the City of Wanneroo, and local police working on a traffic management plan.

The Gnangara area affected by the fire is home to a number of market gardens, a retirement home, a country club and strawberry farms.

What to do:

  • If you are not prepared or you plan to leave, leave now if the way is clear.
  • If you are well prepared and plan to actively defend your home, make final preparations now.
  • If you are not at home, do not try to return as conditions in the area could be very dangerous.
  • Close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.

A number of roads have been closed including Sydney Road, Stoney Road, Gnangara Road, Joyce Road, Pine Crest Way, Colonial Circle and Lakelands Drive.

A bushfire watch and act alert was also issued for those near the Gnangara area, bounded by Lake Gnangara, Sydney Road, Tuscan Way, Colonial Circle, Lakelands Drive, Badgerup Road and Lake Gnangara in the City of Wanneroo.

Emergency services warned residents could either leave now or prepare their bushfire plan.
