Snow predicted for start of summer as temperatures sink ‘well below average’

Summer might start on Sunday, but don’t get your beach towels out just yet: we’re more likely to see snow than sunshine.

Melbourne can expect showers on Saturday and a top of 18, while the first day of summer brings rainfalls of up to 5mm and a top of 17.

Monday is set to be coldest, windiest and rainiest day of the week, with a top temperature of 15 and the potential of snow on the mountain tops.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s duty forecaster Michael Halfpenny said in the cusp between spring and summer, it wasn’t unusual to see cold spells in Melbourne.
