Jones on cusp of winning second Stonehaven Cup

Matt Jones is poised to join a select band of golfers to have won the Australian Open twice as he leans on the experience of his final round heart-stopper four years ago to seal another Stonehaven Cup.

US PGA Tour player Jones, who won the 2015 event at The Australian Golf Club on a rollercoaster final day which featured a triple bogey and double bogey, will wake up on Sunday morning with a three-shot lead in the national championship.

On moving day, which ended up featuring very little moving, a composed Jones (-13) fired a three-under 68 to surge three shots clear of American Cameron Tringale (69) with the world’s best amateur Takumi Kanaya (70) joining hardened professionals Louis Oosthuizen (70) and Paul Casey (71) a shot further back in third.

Jones squeezed in a knee-knocking final putt on the 72nd hole in 2015 to deny dual-winner Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott, a feat which now has him in the prime position to join Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Peter Thomson as a multiple winner of the event.
