Horrified by scenes of people forced to flee onto South Coast beaches to escape bushfires, Bondi Surf Bathers’ Lifesaving Club president Brent Jackson put out a call to members for donations to help those in need.
By Saturday morning the surf club was full of boxes of goods – and the donations have continued to flood in since, including canned goods, water, hygiene products, clothes, tents, medical supplies and more.
“The thought as a leader of this club as to what it would be like if we had 40,000 people waiting on the beach during an emergency is similar to the feeling they must have down there,” Mr Jackson said. “It’s just horrifying”.
People have come from all over Sydney to make donations which will be sent to fire affected communities in NSW and Victoria.
