‘Fairytale couple’: Family of fatally shot Yarraville couple speak of their loss

Lindita, 25, died shortly after the ambush and Veton, 29, died a day later in hospital.

The alleged gunman, Lindita’s 55-year-old estranged father, remains at The Alfred hospital in a critical but stable condition with gunshot wounds and is yet to be interviewed by police.

The couple were farewelled at a funeral in Carlton at the Albanian Australian Islamic Mosque on Saturday.

A week after the tragedy, their families have remembered Lindita – who hadn’t had any contact with her father for many years – and Veton as a “fairytale couple” who were the “envy of all” who knew them.

“To say they were happy together is an understatement,” Veton’s elder brother Drilon told The Age on Tuesday.

“You hear people talk about other couples and how much love they have for one another but this was truly something else.

“They were inseparable and in sync. He was the most confident person you’d ever meet in the world and she was the only person who could peg him down a few notches.

“I’ll always be thankful to them for making me believe that fairytale couples do exist. They set the bar extremely high for everyone.”

The couple met through Lindita’s brother Arben, who was a high school friend of Veton. Veton and Lindita bonded over their similar cultural backgrounds and cultural beliefs.

Veton was also very close to his two brothers, Drilon and Lindor, and considered each as best friends.

On Tuesday, Drilon described his younger brother as a “troublemaker”, known for his “cheeky escapades”.

“He was also very loving and selfless, extremely selfless, and he was always looking for a way to make people laugh – it doesn’t matter the circumstances, doesn’t matter how angry you were or the severity of situation.

“He was a character. He was the main character in our lives and now we are all just left wandering.

Veton’s parents – mother Zirka and father Alil, who is a well-known leader in the Albanian-Australian community – are now grappling to come to terms with what happened to their son and his wife, who they considered a daughter.

“There are moments of weakness and moments of strength,” said Drilon. “They are doing as good as they can be. I don’t think they’ll ever be the same … Only time will tell how much we actually heal.”

In a statement, Lindita’s brother Arben Shaptafaj, known as Beni, said he will always remember his sister – the “diamond in the family” – for her smile and the way she brought laughter and joy into any situation.

He said one of the proudest moments of his life was when she once told him he was not just a brother to her, but a “brother, father and best friend all in one”.

“You brought me out of the darkest places with just your smile and we were always on each other’s side no matter what,” he wrote in the tribute.

“We always said it was us against the world no matter what.

“As much as I taught you in life, you taught me. You made me the man that wanted to be strong for you and because it was you, strength came naturally. There is so many things to miss now and I could go on forever about the both of you but I will remember them all in my heart and live my life so much more like you.”

He also said he had lost his best friend in Veton, who he considered to be the brother he never had.

Veton had a crazy sense of humour, and a charisma and charm that nobody could match, Beni said.

He said Veton’s love for Lindita was “endless and gave her all the happiness in the world.”

Drilon said his family had been overwhelmed by the “incredible” response and support they had received from relatives, friends, and the community in Australia and overseas since last week’s tragedy.

And in their grief, the family has relayed a simple message to the public.

“Put down your phone, close your laptop, shut off your screen, and go embrace your parents, your siblings, your friends and all of those who matter to you.

“Hold them, tell them you love them, and do so every opportunity you get, because my family would give it all just to hold Veton and Lindita once again.”
