Young girl in stable condition after central Queensland shark bite

A young girl has suffered lacerations to her leg after a shark bite off the central Queensland coast.

The nine-year-old was in waters around North West Island, about 100 kilometres east of Yeppoon, when the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.

Paramedics said the girl had been bitten on the leg by a shark but was in a stable condition.

A Bundaberg-based rescue helicopter was called to meet her Heron Island, about 27 kilometres south-east. Volunteer Marine Rescue were also providing assistance.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a middle-aged man was airlifted to hospital with minor injuries after being bitten by a shovel nose shark off the island.

The largest island in the Capricornia Cays National Park, it features a camping area accessible only by boat and can accommodate up to 150 people.
