Australia Day 2020: What’s open, what’s closed and what’s on in Melbourne

Where to find fireworks

Dandenong Park

More than 11,000 people are expected to join the Australia Day Festival in Dandenong Park. The huge council-run event boasts African drumming performances, rides, food and market stalls and ends with a fireworks spectacular at 9.25pm. More Details here.

Rye Foreshore

Those heading to the peninsula can enjoy a free community BBQ courtesy of the Rye Lions Club on the foreshore from 2pm, as well as live music and kids entertainment. The fireworks show will start at 9.30pm, weather permitting. More details here.

Mornington Park

Singer Kate Ceberano will be the headline act at Mornington’s Australia Day celebrations. The festival in Mornington Park kicks off with a PAW Patrol show for the kids at 3pm. There’s rides, free mini golf and lawn games, a food precinct and roving entertainers. Following an official flag-raising ceremony at 5.15pm, Ceberano will take to the stage at 8.40pm. Lake Wendouree, Ballarat

Fireworks are going ahead, weather permitting, at 9.30pm at Lake Wendouree in Ballarat. The council will use the opportunity to raise money for the bushfire recovery effort. More details here.

Australia Day Parade

Multicultural Melbourne, in all its colourful glory, will be out in force for the official Australia Day parade along Swanston Street. It starts at 11am at the corner of Swanston and Bourke streets and ends at the Kings Domain Gardens. More than 1000 participants from over 80 community and cultural groups are taking part, many in their traditional dress. More details here.

Invasion Day Rally

Tens of thousands of people are expected to join the Invasion Day protest calling for the abolition of Australia Day. It kicks off from the steps of Parliament House on Spring Street at 11am. This year, protesters are being urged to give cash to Indigenous Australians on the day as arrears for living on “stolen land”. More details here.

Share the Spirit Festival

Victoria’s longest-running Aboriginal music festival, Share the Spirit Festival, begins in the Treasury Gardens at midday on Sunday. There will be performances from indigenous artists and market stalls selling food and artwork. More details here.

Koorie chill out

The Glen Eira Council will be hosting a free community event at Booran Reserve in Glen Huntly to recognise the significance of the date to promote understanding, respect and reconciliation. From 6pm to 8pm there will be a smoking ceremony, Aboriginal music, face painting and other activities. More details here.

Australian Open

Grab a ticket to Rod Laver arena and watch the world’s best players vie for a place in the quarter finals. You can also get a ground pass to watch the tennis on the big screen and check out the other activities. At the AO live stage Fatboy Slim will perform at 7.30pm on Sunday, while Seeker Love Keeper and Kate Miller-Heidke are performing from 6.10pm on Monday. More details here.

The Lord of the Rings Marathon

For any Lord of the Rings fans out there the Astor Theatre will be hosting a Lord of the Rings movie marathon on Australia Day. The session begins at 10am and tickets are $35. More details here.

Summertime Social

The rooftop of the Federation Square car park has been transformed into a summertime playground, suitable for all ages, with food trucks, lawn games and live music. It opens from 11am til late on Sunday, and from 11am to 10pm on Monday. More details here.

Australia Sunday at The Albion

The Albion is hosting a fundraising event for the Australian bushfire appeal. There will be live music and DJ performances from midday Sunday. Entry is $20 after 5pm. Money collected at the door will be matched by The Albion and donated to the CFA and Wildlife Victoria. More details here.
