Harley Bennell suffers another calf setback

Melbourne have confirmed that uncontracted midfielder Harley Bennell suffered another minor calf strain on Wednesday as he attempts to earn a spot on their list for 2020.

Although the injury is considered minor, it is a major blow for the 27-year-old who is training with the Demons in the hope of being added to their list during the pre-season supplemental selection period.

Bennell has played just two games in four seasons since he was traded to Fremantle from the Gold Coast with calf problems giving him no chance to shine at the Dockers.

However his hopes rose in the off-season when he had surgery on both calves and Melbourne gave him a chance to impress over summer, convinced he had the right attitude to potentially return.

Bennell will continue his rehabilitation with the Demons, which have never been in a rush to get him ready for round one however the setback does make their decision on whether to add him to their list more difficult.

The former West Australian has been on light duties in recent weeks, having settled into Melbourne well with his family.
