Pole top fires leave Perth residents in the dark

Up to 50 pole top fires overnight have left huge swathes of the metropolitan area without power.

More than 22,500 Western Power customers are waiting to have their service restored, with the worst-affected suburbs being Thornlie, Canning Vale, Wandi, Trigg and Spearwood.

About 100 poles have sustained damage due to humidity and moisture, according to authorities who said misty or humid conditions can “combine with dust and pollution and create a paths or ‘tracks’ on the insulators which lets electricity jump across”.

Close to 50,000 homes and businesses were affected overnight with crews on the ground this morning continuing to repair damage.
