Beirut: Russian airstrikes near a hospital and a bakery killed 11 and injured 37 in Syria’s final rebel stronghold of Idlib on Thursday, putting one of its largest medical facilities out of service.
The bombing was close to al-Shami medical centre in the town of Ariha just after midnight, according to White Helmets civil defence rescuers.
Witnesses reported seeing dust-covered doctors run out of the clinic screaming following the attack, which partially damaged the facility’s walls. The wailing of women and children rang out as rescue workers searched for corpses beneath the rubble.
Russian and Syrian regime warplanes have regularly targeted medical facilities in rebel-held areas of Syria, in contravention of international law.
