‘He did exactly what he told you’: The moment Gargasoulas’ girlfriend learnt of Bourke St rampage

Police say Ms Muo did not tell them of Gargasoulas’ threats until she was formally interviewed about 2pm, after the deadly rampage.

Later that night, in the carpark of a McDonald’s restaurant, senior homicide detective Lachlan Watson broke the news to Ms Muo that Gargasoulas had run down people in the city.

In that conversation Senior Detective Watson said: “He did exactly what he told you.”

The following is an edited transcript of their conversation:

Ms Muo: Did Jimmy get … Jimmy is arrested yeah?

Senior Detective Watson: I’m sure by now you know what he’s done.

Ms Muo: Yeah.

Senior Detective Watson: What were you told?

Ms Muo: I know what he’s done, he just stabbed his brother.

Senior Detective Watson: So you don’t know about the second part … what he did after?

Ms Muo: After he drove off? No.

Senior Detective Watson: Really? Alright, well then we’re going to have a conversation and I’ll have to tell you what he’s done because it’s pretty serious. I wasn’t sure if you knew or not, I thought you did. He did exactly what he told you.

Ms Muo: He ran …

Senior Detective Watson: He ran people over. There is about three or four people dead.

Ms Muo: Oh my god, why, oh my god, oh god. Why oh my god, were they adults or kids or …. Were they adults that he ran over, or just were kids? Oh, god.

Senior Detective Watson: It’s probably just best that we talk about that back when we get back to the station all right.

Ms Muo: Yeah.

Senior Detective Watson: I thought I, I thought you had a fair idea of what had happened.

Ms Muo: No, no I haven’t been told anything.

Ms Muo, who had been in an on-of relationship with Gargasoulas for about five months, was scheduled to give evidence during the inquest, but she cannot be found.

Ian Freckelton, QC, asked Coroner Jacqui Hawkins if she would consider issuing an arrest warrant for Ms Muo so she could be questioned at the inquest.

But Ms Hawkins said Ms Muo was a victim and that it was inappropriate to issue an arrest warrant.
