Liberals demand probe over Greens councillor’s $17,500 childcare bill

The Victorian Liberals are demanding an investigation into claims a Port Phillip councillor billed ratepayers $17,500 in childcare expenses.

Greens’ councillor Ogy Simic’s expense claims attracted controversy last year when it emerged he claimed nearly three times the amount of childcare costs of all of his fellow councillors combined in a two-year period.

But the Liberals told State Parliament on Thursday evening they had discovered discrepancies in Cr Simic’s expense records and that he may have claimed money for a private babysitter on days when his child was cared for at a council-provided childcare centre.

Cr Simic says the Liberals’ allegations, made under Parliamentary privilege which protects against legal action, are false and that he can prove he did nothing wrong with his expenses.
