Houli out of season opener with calf strain

Richmond have been dealt a blow on the eve of the season with All-Australian defender Bachar Houli ruled out of the clash with Carlton because of a calf strain.

Houli suffered the injury at training on Tuesday morning with the club saying he was set to undergo scans before a return date would be determined.

Any potential return date would be shaped by what football actually takes place in the coming weeks and months, such is the uncertainty surrounding the AFL season, which the AFL announced on Monday had been reduced to 17 rounds as the coronavirus crisis grips the game and broader society.

The Tigers are otherwise extremely healthy heading into the traditional season opener, having almost an entire playing list to pick from as they begin their premiership defence.
