WA heat map reveals more than 50 coronavirus cases near Perth CBD

In the metropolitan area, more than 50 cases are near the Perth CBD, although the total amount stretch as far north as Wanneroo and as far south as Mandurah.

Health Minister Roger Cook said the map would exclude cases traced back to cruise ship passengers and other non-WA cases.

Cases concentrated around Perth's CBD.

“The map will not reveal the exact location of individual cases, ensuring patient confidentiality,” he said.

WA currently has the fourth-highest number of cases in the country at 392, although a significant portion are from cruise ship passengers or from those who have travelled overseas.

There is still little evidence of community transmission in the state, although Mr Cook announced the Health Department would roll out an expanded testing regime later this week.

As of Thursday, testing will be extended to anyone showing signs of a fever and an acute respiratory infection such as shortness of breath, a cough or a sore throat.

The new criteria departs from previous restrictions on COVID-19 tests, which would only be given if a person was a priority worker, had been overseas, or had been around a confirmed case.

Mr Cook said while the low number of confirmed cases each day were encouraging, there was “much more work to do”.

“The expanded testing regime in Western Australia will really help us to find new cases, protect our vulnerable populations and ensure we are tracking the movement of this virus as it develops,” he said.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure that testing is available to those who are symptomatic and preparing our health system to care for those who need it.”

As part of a detailed plan to be rolled out shortly, WA’s clinics could soon have the capacity to test up to 10,000 people a day, up from the current rate of about 400.

The heat map will be updated daily.
