Bilby baby boom hailed as a big success for Western Plains Zoo

A bilby breeding program at Taronga Western Plains Zoo is being praised as a huge success with 19 joeys born during the program since it commenced six months ago.

Five of the young bilbies are already completely independent from their mothers while all seven adult females in the sanctuary are carrying twins.

“Now that Dubbo has received some good rainfall over the past three months and the habitat in the sanctuary has improved significantly, we are seeing the bilbies gaining weight and all are now breeding,” keeper Steve Kleinig said.

“Once mature, greater bilbies can breed up to four times a year if the conditions are favourable, meaning they need adequate habitat and food supply.”
