‘Welcome home darling’: White Island survivor returns to Melbourne home after 6 months in hospital

A young survivor of the White Island volcano eruption who lost her father and sister has left hospital for the first time since December.

Stephanie Browitt, 23, was on the island with her father Paul and sister Krystal on December 9 when the tragedy occurred. Paul and Krystal, who had recently turned 21, died while the mother of the family, Marie, remained onboard the cruise ship off the coast of Whakatāne, New Zealand.

Ms Browitt has been in hospital for six months recovering from third-degree burns she suffered to the majority of her body.

Her back, legs, hands and part of her face were burnt and she required skin grafts. She needed to re-learn how to walk.
