Grandad saves wife and granddaughter in freak cow stampede near Geelong

A grandmother and her nine-year-old granddaughter are recovering in hospital after a freak cow stampede west of Melbourne.

Maree Cook, 74, and her granddaughter Casey were on their family farm moving cows when the herd suddenly turned on them about midday on Sunday at Freshwater Creek, south of Geelong.

Grandfather Harry Cook heard screaming and was worried they would be killed, so drove straight into the herd with his ute in an attempt to save them.

“I saw my wife about seven-foot in the air cartwheeling across the sky. The cows had got her and thrown her,” he told Nine News.
