‘Extremely saddening:’ Royal Exhibition Building vandalised after $20m refurbishment

A group of about 20 people vandalised the facade of the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building on Saturday night.

Police are hunting the group, which was seen by security staff tagging the front doors and steps with red and white graffiti between 8.30pm and 9.15pm.

The southern, city-facing side of the building, including the bluestone front steps and ceremonial front entrance, received a $20 million refurbishment that had been completed in recent weeks.

The building in Carlton Gardens, one of the last remaining major 19th-century exhibition buildings in the world, was completed in 1880 and hosted the sitting of the first Australian Parliament in 1901.
