“I picked up the cheapest guitar I had, went wheeling out after them, came around the corner, said ‘come on boys, let’s go’,” Mike told 3AW on Tuesday.
“I ran them out of the house and smashed their (car) window in the process.”
He said he has about five or six guitars, but chose his bass guitar as it’s an older model he uses less often and has a greater reach.
“They say keep maybe a golf club or something like that, but there’s nothing heavier than a guitar at the end of the day,” he added.
Senior Sergeant Samantha Ryan said it was “a pretty horrific situation” for the victims, but she admired Mike’s courage.
“I admire his bravery and tenacity and quick thinking, innovative thinking, to grab the guitar to defend himself and the house,” she said on Tuesday.
“Community members are absolutely justified in using proportionate force to defend themselves and their property … which he has done.”
The two offenders who entered the house were masked and wore hoodies, the senior sergeant said.
Another man and a woman are believed to have been in a getaway vehicle.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage and urged anyone with information to come forward.
As for the bass guitar, Mike says it has a few scratches but is still in good nick.
