Any Australian can be nominated within the general division and all eligible nominations are considered by the Council for the Order of Australia, which recommends awards for the Governor-General’s approval.

Clarke has been appointed an AO for: “distinguished service to cricket as a player at the national and international level, through leadership roles, and to the community”.
