Hawks heading down the highway with confidence

Hawthorn have used markers to replicate the exact dimensions of GMHBA Stadium at Waverley Park in preparation for their first clash at the Cats’ fortress since 2006, having used a similar preparation before upsetting Fremantle at the long Subiaco ground in the 2015 preliminary final.

Although no players on their list have played at the venue in a Hawthorn jumper, the Hawks are not daunted at the prospect of travelling down the highway to meet Geelong, with 12 players on their list having played AFL football at the venue with other clubs.

Shaun Burgoyne, James Frawley, Sam Frost, Jack Gunston, Ricky Henderson, Ben McEvoy, Tom Mitchell, Jonathan Patton, Tom Scully and Chad Wingard all played there with their former clubs as did Jaeger O’Meara, who is in doubt for the clash with a fractured cheekbone.

Former Port Adelaide defender Jarman Impey will be absent as he recovers from a knee reconstruction, however last year’s best-and-fairest winner James Worpel played at the ground as captain of Geelong Falcons and wingman Isaac Smith played there in the VFL.
