Vale Noel ‘Ned’ Kelly: beloved rugby league hard man dies

Legendary rugby league hard man Noel Kelly passed away, aged 84, in Sydney on Sunday afternoon after suffering a heart attack-induced stroke on May 16, the day his former Western Suburbs teammate, Arthur Summons, died.

Kelly was chosen in the Australian Rugby League Team of the Century, as well as the Queensland and Magpies teams of the century.

He represented Australia on three Kangaroo tours, playing hooker or prop, and his sole Test try came at Swinton in 1963 in a historic 50-12 demolition of Great Britain.

Awarded an OAM for his services to rugby league, including the care of former players, “Ned” was one of his sport’s most popular players.
