Senior Victorian public servants cop COVID pay freeze

The Victorian government has announced a pay for freeze for senior executive public servants as departments undergo belt-tightening stemming from the economic fallout brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pay freeze does not apply to politicians, however, with an independent tribunal due to rule on a potential MP wage freeze in the coming weeks.

Less than a month ago, some of Victoria’s highest paid public servants received hefty pay increases, some in the tens of thousands of dollars, while the state continues to grapples with the economic downturn.

An independent tribunal – responsible for setting remuneration for MPs and executives in the public sector – previously amended pay brackets for public service executives resulting in effective pay increases of more than $20,000 for some of Victoria’s most senior civil servants.
