A more accurate assessment may be that Apple and Google have each been tweaking their well established mobile computing platforms to a similar end, but have prioritised differently. Both want you to access information at a glance or a voice command, the difference has always been Google prioritises choice, Apple prioritises simplicity.

Widgets on the home screen is a usability win for iOS; allowing live, updating information at a glance while also pushing down icons on our increasingly large phones.
